I ran downstairs to see him standing over a box of broken dishes. There are ten more under my bed, but Dad doesn’t need to know that. I’m trying to be more grown-up, so I only put three dog stuffed animals on my bed. I decorated my own room to show Dad I’m responsible. Dad wants me to prove that I can be responsible enough for a puppy first… and then he’ll consider getting me one. Now that we’ve moved into a house with a big backyard, we can really get a puppy! I just have to convince my dad that it’s a good idea first. I looked it up, and the experts on the Internet say that puppies need lots of room to run outdoors. I don’t really agree with him, but our old apartment in California wasn’t big enough for a puppy anyway. That’s old enough to ride a bike around our street, but not old enough to have my own puppy-or at least that’s what my dad said. ![]() ![]() ![]() In any case, if you’ve gotten this far with the audiobooks, do not hesitate to pick up Wolf Bane. A small, selfish part of me would have liked to see the writing style mature as its audience has, but the thought of new young readers discovering and devouring all 9 books is too enchanting. There is no question these are the characters we knew all those years ago, and any simplicity or repetitiveness inherent to YA writing (which we may have more readily excused in youth) is camouflaged by Sir Ian’s masterful vocal colour. I haven’t read the physical books, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sir Ian McKellen’s voice and performance is in large part responsible for this continuity of feeling. Happily, I can report that Michelle Paver has more than reignited the prehistoric bright-beast-that-bites-hot inside me it was a pure joy to return to Torak’s world. There’s always a chance revisiting a beloved world will taint the remembered magic. I finished the 6th (and at the time final) audiobook in the series when I was a teenager, so as an adult I was as apprehensive as I was delighted to learn there’d be an entire sequel trilogy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her relationship with her stepmother Levana is strained at best, especially as Winter is secretly in love with Winter's royal guard Jacin.
